FASHION FILM NOIR
Mareunrol Detective
this is an amazing take on 50s film noir with a fashion twist. It was created by Latvian designer Mareunrol.
ONE MAN'S TRASH IS MARC JACOBS TREASURE

well, well, well, well, well (yes, that many) look who just took hobo chic to a whole new level. Marc Jacobs, the master at mixing street fashion with high fashion has just introduced the raindrop besace (retail 1960$, and no I didn't mean to write $19.60)... so may mock it but they probably love Coach.

FOR THE LOVE OF CARDBOARD

for the past couple of years I have developed a strange love for cardboard....maybe it is due to the proliferation of the use of cardboard in pop-up shops...or maybe it's reminds me of my art school days when one had to be creative (ie cheap) with materials....here is an example of cardboard being used for a store interior(permanent)....by burnt toast design...and the cardboard dog may just be the perfect pet
LOOKING LIKE YOU'RE GETTING IT ON THE REGULAR
commonwealth utilities is a recently launched mens' wear line by Richard Christensen and Anthony Keegan...past shows have received rave reviews for their champagne and oreo approach to mens' fashion... definitely check out their website for videos of the collection and 'men we love'....the line is carried by Holt Renfrew in Toronto and SAKS in NYC
Christiansen was mentored by Oliverio Toscani at his Fabrica art and design school (Toscani is the man behind all the controversial united colors of benetton ads)....Christiansen is also well known for his FUCK the recession campaign

PILFERING FROM THE PAST FOR THE PRESENT
during poor economic times in the not-so-distant past designers would create miniatures of their collections instead of full size garments...artist andrew yang has created miniatures of some of the significant collections of spring 2010...reproducing intricate details of the designers collections

SIZE STILL MATTERS

V magazine's latest is called the size issue - where they set themselves the goal of showing models of a variety of sizes (stolen idea from an up-and-coming designer's runway show) but there is a hitch - we get to see many women of many different sizes (0-16) but all the men are shirtless with ripped abs...has the pendulum finally swung the other way -

VIVA LA REVOLUCION

I am not going to tell you that military is huge for spring because that shouldn't matter - an army jacket is as classic as a black leather jacket or a dark denim jacket...you should own already if you don't..and no need to go all high -fashion - hit a vintage store or APC - you want it to look authentic

DO WE NEED MORE PUFFA?

as you will soon discover I love all things CDG (comme des garcons)...CDG has collaborated with everyone who is anyone and they show no sign of stopping (mostly because it is a huge commercial success for anyone who teams with CGD). This time around CDG and MONCLER are teaming up to introduce CDG MONCLER 365...I'm just hoping it includes more than the puffa jackets

STEALING TIME (AND SOME BEATS) WITH NAOMI
I will always love that Naomi and Steven (Klein) turned community services into the fashion spread The Naomi Diaries
WHAT TYPE ARE YOU?

the culture thieving continues as usual at pentagram (brilliantly, of course) with their freudian-esque analysis of typeface based on personality....comes complete with a therapist to guide you through the process...check it out
THIS IS HOW W(e) DOES IT
the design director at w magazine, Edward Leida, walks us through how he pilfers from culture to create design
BLACK IS THE NEW BLACK?

french vogue created quite the stir this past year when they did a photo shoot that featured blackface (white models painted black a la minstrel show)...at the same time Tyra Banks made no waves when she did her version of blackface on her show ANTM by painting models mixed races other than their own...so who gets to play with race? who gets to re-appropriate it? and who doesn't? is this a new example of racism or imperialism? who owns which races?
